How We Build

Habitat for Humanity Calaveras builds simple, decent affordable housing for families in need.

Habitat Calaveras uses sustainable and “green” building practices to achieve

these three goals:

Habitat houses should be energy efficient.

Habitat houses should be healthy places for families to live.

Habitat’s practice & materials should be environmentally friendly.

Habitat for Humanity Calaveras has been serving Calaveras County since 1996. Since then we have built 16 houses and repaired hundreds of homes – all in Calaveras County.

How We Build

Habitat houses are built using wood frame construction, gypsum board interior walls, wood, concrete or vinyl siding and asphalt shingle roofs. All current homes built by us include energy saving features such as increased insulation, low-flow water fixtures, CFL or LED lighting and solar installations where applicable. Our homes are LEED certified.

Habitat homes are modestly-sized houses that are built to meet the needs of our partner families. Habitat’s commitment to build for people in need extends to those with disabilities. When possible, Habitat homes incorporate basic accessible design features such as zero-step entrances and wide passage doors and hallways.

Our partner families are required to contribute a minimum of 400 hours during the build process, as Habitat believes that this form of “sweat equity” fosters pride of homeownership.
